We finally made it to Dan Modern Chinese in the 2nd & PCH shopping complex of Long Beach. They sat us down rather quickly and made sure that we were seated in the area that we requested. We ordered a good selection of appetizers to start off with and were very pleased with the food. They had a good selection of sake as well in which we took advantage of. Special shout out to the manager on duty Jerry. He went over and above to make sure that our visit was above satisfactory. Overall we had a great time and will be back.

Cesar is THAT ONE!!! Would happily drive here from LA to enjoy the service, atmosphere AND the food. The green peppercorn pilsner was a pleasant surprise and has flavor profile that compliments the crispy tofu and xiao long bao!!!! The xiao long bao has an insanely flavorful presence with a broth clarity that allows the tenderness of the stuffing. And the tenderness of the dumpling wrapper is PEAK, with great structural integrity. The mapo dofu was emotional🥹 even though i am a Sichuan food girlie who needs insane spice levels. I recommend driving here to allow yourself an enjoyable dining experience near the water, versus giving a certain chain with hours long wait times the precious and fleeting existence we have in this planet.

Ricardo was my waiter and it was my first time here. This place is a gem, the food is prepared fresh and with authenticity. Some people say you can’t taste MSG, but I have a sensitivity to it, and I can say this place DOESN’T use MSG! This was something I deeply appreciate, and I take food serious, I enjoy experiencing culture via food and the people who serve it. This restaurant wasn’t too busy Saturday afternoon, to my surprise, but it should be hustling and bustling! I didn’t let this detour me, I lean on hidden gems mostly when I dine out. If you are in the area and looking for something new, and unique, or you are spending the morning at the Huntington Library/Museum and Botanical Garden like I was, (a short 7 minute drive through historic Pasadena/San Marino) try this true Chinese restaurant. The parking is directly across the way, they have a patio, and it’s nestled amongst other charming stores and restaurants. On weekends the location hosts local creatives markets, and music. I had the following increíble, well balanced and savory dishes: pork and chicken dumplings, vegetables fried rice (was very different in a delightful way!), chicken soup, three cup chicken, beef and Chinese broccoli, and jasmine ice tea.

Oh geezuz, if I wanna stroke out on sodium I’ll be bk Feet swollen for 2 days, everything that shouldn’t have salt, tasted like a salt lick. I was almost faint from being so hungry and was really looking forward to it. Slick interior, attentive server. Only 4 other parties in the place. I just couldn’t get past the sodium on everything, the dipping sauce I ordered to counter the salt…was full of salt. Please please rate your plates for content of sodium and sugar….add it on the menu.

Manager Ann really made this a memorable dining experience with her attention to detail and kind tableside manner. We stumbled upon Dan Modern Chinese looking for something late night and what a wonderful surprise! We ordered the Dan Mein Short Rib which was so well seasoned and the steak was tender. Amazing dish! The oxtail noodle soup was another pleasant surprise. Cesar presented every course with a smile and kind demeanor. Overall, just a joy of a place where the food was outpaced only by the remarkable service!
